A city inside a county's postal map
Falls Church is its own city, but the postal name is shared. Fairfax County has Falls Church mailing addresses, and Arlington County lies next door. Your mailing address does not tell you which rules apply. Check the tax record or the water bill, and if you are in the county, use the McLean sheet or Annandale and Springfield. For the Arlington side, see North Arlington.

Water
The city's specification says water mains and service lines within the city are owned and maintained by Fairfax Water. Fairfax Water's rule in the county is that it owns the line through the meter, and the owner takes over after it. We could not confirm that this exact split applies inside the city. Ask Fairfax Water where your responsibility begins, and read who owns which pipe.
Sewer
The city's permit list includes a Sanitary Sewer Service Application. We could not confirm from the city's own pages who owns the lateral. Ask the city's Building Safety Division. In neighboring Fairfax County the owner owns the whole lateral to the main; do not assume the city follows suit.
Permits and fees
The city's pages list a plumbing permit and a fee for sewer repair plumbing permits: $91.50 from July 1, 2026. The city's permit pages would not open for us, so that comes from a search listing. Confirm the fee and process with the city before you book work. Licenses come from the state, through DPOR. See permits by place.
Lead
Fairfax Water publishes lead information for its customers. The city has no separate lead page that we could confirm. Do not test or disturb a pipe yourself; ask the utility or a licensed plumber.
What the map can't tell you
- Who owns your sewer lateral.
- Whether the water meter is the exact boundary of Fairfax Water's responsibility.
- Whether any historic review applies to your property.
- Whether the sewer repair fee has changed since the page was indexed.
Check your own address
- Look at your water bill for the supplier's name and phone number.
- Ask the Building Safety Division in writing who owns the lateral and what permit it needs.
- Ask whether your repair counts as a sewer repair permit at $91.50.
- Check your plumber's DPOR license.
- Dial 811 three days before any digging.
